Top 30 Australian Songs

Some time ago, our Program Director, Neil Butler, was talked into presenting a few top 30’s on his then Radio Ga Ga web site. Now that the RGG web site has been closed down we thought we should transfer the Top 30s across here. This time, we present Neil's Top 30 Australian songs.

Let us be very clear – these countdowns are so incredibly difficult to do, given, in this instance, the amazing array of wonderful music that was recorded by Australian artists since the early 1960’s but he’s done it. It is very much HIS OPINION – there’ll be some songs in the list that will surprise you and others that will surprise you by NOT being there. The key criterion is that, unless the song is quite a stand-out song, it will have charted nationally at some stage - one or two might have snuck into this countdown without meeting this requirement but when you see which ones, you'll understand why they belong in this list!.

Let us tell you how much work went into this – plenty. To start with, there is a trawling through our favourite reference book for such matters – The Book: Top 40 Research by Steven Scanes and Jim Barnes – identifying candidates, with Neil being ruthless as he went through. In the end he brought it down to 50 and, to start with, we’re going to list (chronologically) the twenty that didn’t quite make it:

  • Sing – Johnny O’Keefe – 17 February 1962
  • The Loved One – The Loved Ones – 5 October 1966
  • Highway 31 – Johnny Chester – didn’t chart nationally (first charted in Melbourne 20 December 1969)
  • Smiley – Ronnie Burns – 7 January 1970
  • Turn Up Your Radio – Masters Apprentices – 4 June 1970
  • Rachel – Russell Morris – 18 June 1970
  • Melanie Makes Me Smile – The Strangers – 30 July 1970
  • Teach Me How To Fly – Jeff St John & Copperwine – 25 December 1970
  • Eleanor Rigby – Zoot – 7 January 1971
  • Come Back Again – Daddy Cool – 16 July 1971
  • Wings Of An Eagle – Russell Morris – 16 November 1972
  • Let Go – Brian Cadd – 3 October 1974
  • I Love You, I Honestly Love You – Olivia Newton-John – 10 October 1974
  • It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll) – AC/DC – 8 January 1976
  • Reckless – Australian Crawl – 6 October 1983
  • Throw Your Arms Around Me – Hunters and Collectors – 4 June 1986 (re-entered 21 January 1991)
  • He’s Just No Good For You – Mental As Anything – 22 July 1987
  • To Her Door – Paul Kelly – 28 October 1987
  • Under The Milky Way – The Church – 23 March 1988
  • One Summer – Daryl Braithwaite – 8 March 1989
