I have said it before and I suspect I’ll say it again before this countdown is done … one measure of a great song is its ability to take you somewhere – either to the location referred to in the lyrics or to an incident that occurred relating to the song.
In the case of Reckless, it’s a bit of both. Having lived in Sydney a few years ago, the whole “As the Manly ferry cuts its way to Circular Quay” has some added meaning for me. If you have spent any time in Sydney, you’ll not be able to hear this song without thinking about that glorious commute that so many people enjoy every morning from Manly to the CBD.
But I also remember visiting Sydney many years ago and having an American tourist ask me where he could catch the Manly ferry and proceeded to recite the lyrics of Reckless – even if there were a few that we couldn’t understand!
