This is one of those songs that divides people – some say it is the best love song ever written and others who think it is awful. I have a friend who switches the song off whenever it is played because it brings back terrible memories for her.
Personally, I think it is a fantastic song, erroneously credited to Harry Nilsson by many. Despite the fact that he was a prolific songwriter, he didn’t write this one – it was written by two members of Badfinger who had a minor hit with it in some parts of the world. It is an evocative song – in my case, for whatever reason, it takes me back to a bike shop in Blackburn and picking up my new bike for my 10th birthday.
One measure of a good song is its ability to take you back to a different place and sadly, for some, this one brings back some bad memories for them.
And for those that think that Mariah Carey’s version is better, well … don’t get me started on that.
