Another one of those great sing-along songs that everyone – except for those young ladies who are blessed with the name Caroline – just seems to enjoy singing. It has become a fixture of all Major League Baseball at Fenway Park in Boston and has become so associated with that city that other baseball teams held a minute silence followed by the song in commemoration of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Depending on which story you believe, the song was inspired by Caroline Kennedy and/or was about Diamond’s wife Marsha but the name was changed to provide a three-syllable lyric.

From my perspective, when growing up in the 1960’s, there were only two famous people who shared my name – one walked on the moon and the other one had a hit with Sweet Caroline during the same year.
