The Seekers were probably the biggest musical export out of Melbourne during the 1960s. In 1967, they literally packed out the Myer Music Bowl and the surrounding gardens for a concert. Over 200,000 people turned up for their homecoming concert at the Bowl at a time when the entire city population was only around 2.5 million people – that’s almost 1 in 10 people who lived in Melbourne were there.

The Carnival Is Over was one of the songs on the program that afternoon and, if you search for footage of the performance on YouTube or similar, you’ll see just how incredibly simple and melodic the song is, in great contrast to our number 19 song.

The tune is based on a Russian folk song Volga, Volga mat’ rodnaya but was adapted with English lyrics by Tom Springfield who, apart from being Dusty’s brother, wrote a number of other songs for The Seekers as well.
