There’s not much to say about Khe Sanh that hasn’t been said before – it is, in the minds of many, the pinnacle of Australian music, an alternative to our less-than-inspiring national anthem.
There is so much about this song that captures Australia as it was in the 1970’s, performed by a band that had fought its way to commercial acceptance and then success after some rough gigs at the Largs Pier Hotel.
Like the song that lands at number five, this is a song that is instantly recognisable from the first two or three notes – a song that seems to bring the crowd together for a sing-along more than just about any other. I’ve been in the audience when Barnesy has sung it live – both as a solo performer and with the Chisels and its the one that EVERYONE joins with.
